Design (Typical Layout)

Area: 100-200 sq meter area near kitchen

Outer Boundary (Perennial Sources)

Fencing with moringa, curry leaf, and papaya - perennial sources of vitamins, calcium, iron

Inner Beds (4-5 raised beds of 1m x 5m)

Seasonal vegetables: Leafy greens (spinach, amaranth, fenugreek), cucurbits (bottle gourd, bitter gourd), root vegetables (carrot, radish, beetroot), fruiting vegetables (tomato, brinjal, chilly)

Trellis along wall

Climbing vegetables – cowpea, lablab bean, ridge gourd

Cropping Pattern (Year-round)

Kharif (June-September)

Amaranth, cowpea, okra, cucumber

Rabi (October-January)

Spinach, carrot, radish, cauliflower, cabbage, peas

Summer (February-May)

Bottle gourd, bitter gourd, tomato, brinjal, amaranth

Nutritional Outcome (for a family of 5)

  • Provides 100-150 kg fresh vegetables annually (≈ ₹8,000-12,000 market value)
  • Meets 80-100% of familys requirement for Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium
